Andros Island is the best overall diving destination in the Bahamas. The Andros Barrier Reef runs for about 190 miles along the island and drops into the Tongue of the Ocean. That combination creates access to wall dives, blue holes, caves, wrecks and shallow reefs in one destination.

The best destination depends on the type of diving you want:

Best for Best destination Why it stands out
Best overall diving Andros Island Barrier reef, walls, blue holes, caves and wrecks
Tiger sharks Grand Bahama Tiger Beach and nearby shark sites
Great hammerheads Bimini Seasonal hammerhead encounters near the Gulf Stream
First Bahamas dive trip Nassau and New Providence Accessible reefs, wrecks, shark dives and established operators
Remote walls and varied sites San Salvador More than 50 sites with reefs, walls, ruins and wrecks
Scenic reefs and marine parks The Exumas Clear water, protected areas and sites such as Amberjack Reef

Why Andros Island Is the Best Overall

Andros suits divers who want several types of diving rather than one main animal encounter. A single trip can include:

  • The Andros Barrier Reef
  • Deep wall dives along the Tongue of the Ocean
  • Oceanic and inland blue holes
  • Wrecks and caverns
  • Shallow reef dives for less experienced divers

Andros has more than 180 blue holes, and marine parks protect large areas of the surrounding reef. The island is less developed than Nassau or Grand Bahama, so it offers fewer nightlife and resort options. That trade-off suits divers who want a quieter trip focused on the water.

Best Shark Diving: Grand Bahama and Tiger Beach

Grand Bahama is the best choice for dedicated shark diving. Tiger Beach is known for close encounters with tiger sharks, lemon sharks and Caribbean reef sharks in clear, relatively shallow water. Grand Bahama also has reef shark sites, wrecks, caverns and other reef dives around Freeport.

Shark dives can have certification and experience requirements, so check the operator's rules before booking.

Tiger Beach is an offshore excursion, not a casual shore dive. Reaching it may require a dedicated charter or a multi-day itinerary, which makes Grand Bahama less flexible than Nassau for a short trip.

Best Hammerhead Diving: Bimini

Bimini is the Bahamas' specialist destination for great hammerhead sharks. Hammerheads gather near Bimini's Gulf Stream waters during the cooler part of the year. The island suits photographers and experienced divers whose main goal is a hammerhead encounter.

Bimini also offers:

  • Victory Reef
  • Bimini Wall
  • The S.S. Sapona shipwreck
  • Reef shark encounters
  • Drift and deep-water diving

Bimini is a better choice than Andros or Nassau when seeing a great hammerhead is the main purpose of the trip. Shark sightings are wildlife encounters, so confirm recent conditions and the operator's itinerary before booking.

Best for Convenience: Nassau and New Providence

Nassau is the best practical choice for a short or first Bahamas diving trip. New Providence has close-to-shore reefs, walls, wrecks, blue holes and shark dives. Established dive centers serve beginners through advanced divers.

Nassau also makes it easy to combine diving with restaurants, resorts, nightlife and other island activities. Beginner-friendly sites such as Goulden Cay offer shallow coral areas, while experienced divers can visit deeper wrecks, walls and shark sites.

The trade-off is the setting. Nassau is busier and less remote than Andros, San Salvador and several of the outer islands. It is the strongest choice for logistics, not for the quietest underwater environment.

Best Remote Wall Diving: San Salvador

San Salvador is a strong choice for divers who want remote walls and a mix of site types. The island has more than 50 dive sites, including coral reefs, walls, ruins and shipwrecks. Vicky's Reef and Devil's Claw are known for stingrays and sharks, while Runway 10 has a dramatic wall and occasional hammerhead sightings.

San Salvador suits divers who prefer:

  • Smaller island resorts
  • Lower-key dive conditions
  • Wall diving and reef exploration
  • A quieter trip away from Nassau's resort atmosphere

Are the Exumas Good for Diving?

The Exumas are best for scenic reef diving, protected marine habitats and island-hopping. Amberjack Reef is among the Bahamas' notable reef sites, and the Exuma Cays Land and Sea National Park protects a large marine area where diving and snorkeling are popular.

The Exumas are also home to Thunderball Grotto, an underwater cave system near Staniel Cay with coral, tropical fish and swim-through passages. Entrances and conditions can change with the tide, so use a local guide instead of entering an unfamiliar overhead environment independently.

Important Planning Considerations

Blue-hole, cavern and cave diving are different types of diving. Overhead environments can involve limited exits and other hazards. Use an operator that matches the site to your certification, experience, equipment and gas supply.

If you plan to fly after a multi-day dive trip, Divers Alert Network recommends waiting at least 18 hours after multiple dives or multiple days of diving. After one no-decompression dive, the minimum is 12 hours, although a longer interval provides a greater safety margin.
